Richard E. Johnson, age 77, of St. Ansgar, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at Astera Health in Wadena, MN. Richard was born on February 13, 1947, in Little Falls, MN, to Cecil Johnson and Vivian (Hartwig) Ebel. He graduated from HLV High School in Victor, IA in 1965, he then went on to graduate from the University of Northern Iowa in 1969 with a degree in education. Richard worked for the St. Ansgar Community School district from 1969 – 2004. He met the love of his life, Susan (Fossey) Johnson on August 18, 1973, they were later married on December 22, 1973, at the Central Lutheran Church in Winona, MN. Richard spent his life giving back to the community, whether involvement was at the St. Peter Lutheran Church or his dedication to the local rescue team, Richard’s impact was profound. His commitment to education was unwavering, especially in his role as Chairman of the St. Ansgar Teacher's Association. His leadership on the St. Ansgar City Council and St. Ansgar Aquatic Center Board, further showcased his passion for making a difference in the lives of others. Throughout his years, Richard had a passion for golf, travel, community performances, and sports, always cheering on the students during his teaching years. He found great joy in spending time with his nieces and nephews, cherishing each moment spent together. Richard is survived by his wife, Susan (Fossey) Johnson of St. Ansgar, IA; brothers, Mike (Nancy) Ebel of Green Bay, WI, Paul (Heather) Ebel of Green Bay, WI, and Jeff (Dana) Ebel of Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Johnson and Vivian Ebel; stepmothers, Gloria Barb and Jo Ann Johnson; brother, Carl; and sisters-in-law, Linda Johnson and Diane Fossey. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 16, 2024, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Toeterville, Iowa. A visitation will be held Thursday, August 15, 2024, also at St. Peter Lutheran Church from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Schroeder-Hoff Funeral Home of St. Ansgar is assisting the family with arrangements.
