After graduation in 1973, Wayne moved to Osage and began a fifty-year farming career in pork and crop production. Wayne met his future wife, Ruth Wilde, and they were married in 1975 making their home in the Osage area. They went on to have one child, Angela. Wayne was passionate about conservation and loved what he did for a living, taking active roles in commodity and farming organizations at the local, state, and national level over his lifetime. Wayne and Ruth won many sustainability and conservation awards over the years, most recently winning the 2022 American Soybean Association Conservation Legacy Award. Not only was Wayne an active conservationist, he was also awarded a policy champion award by Iowa Soybean Association for his commitment to advance policy and regulatory issues benefiting the soybean industry. This past month, Wayne was additionally awarded the 2024 Iowa Soybean Association Legacy of Leadership Award, presented to a farmer who has established a history of leadership and has taken an active role in advancing the goals of Iowa Soybean Association. Outside of farming, Wayne will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and friend to many. He loved to travel with his wife and enjoyed trips south to Texas to visit his daughter and her family. For several years, Wayne could be found on tractor rides in Iowa and Minnesota, driving his restored Oliver 66 and Oliver 77. In the summertime, Wayne looked forward to their annual summer vacations in Okoboji where he did his once a year fishing adventures. He was an avid Cyclones fan and throughout the years enjoyed attending football games and tailgates with his family and friends. Wayne and Ruth had also recently taken up camping and had looked forward to spending winters in Texas at the campgrounds.
