Phyllis Mortenson

Phyllis Marian (Reeder) Mortenson passed away on December 13, 2023 in Northwood, Iowa at the Lutheran Retirement Home. Phyllis was born on October 3, 1925, in rural Northwood, the daughter of Tony and Esther (Thoen) Hrubetz. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett, Iowa. She attended rural schools and graduated from high school in Kensett. Phyllis was united in marriage to Robert Reeder on April 30, 1944, in Northwood. To this marriage four children were born. Following the death of Robert in 1965, she married Clarence Mortenson of Northwood in 1979. Clarence passed away in 1994. Phyllis worked at Mortenson Produce, Winnebago Industries and the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood for many years. Phyllis was a Sunday school teacher at First Lutheran Church in Northwood for over 30 years, was a youth sponsor at the church and a 4-H leader. She was an active member of Eastern Star in Northwood and White Shrine in Mason City. Phyllis enjoyed her flower beds, decorating her home for all holidays and trout fishing with her sons. She was 89 years old when she went on her last trout fishing outing. Those left to cherish her memory are her: daughter, Patricia (Richard) Stromley of Mason City; sons, Daniel (Carolyn) Reeder and Dennis (Janet) Reeder, all of Northwood; stepdaughter, Melissa Mortenson of Minneapolis; four grandchildren, Randall (Kris) Stromley of Des Moines, Robert Stromley and special friend, Kristi Tabbert, of Mason City, Anneke (Jake) Urbatsch of Northwood, and Garret (Danielle) Reeder of Ankeny; four great-granddaughters and four great-grandsons. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husbands, her son, Bob, and stepdaughter, Kay. Also her parents, three brothers, three sisters, nieces, nephews and many in-laws. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 22, 2023 at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in Northwood with Rev. Becky Sogge officiating. The family will greet people one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.
