James Jay Winemiller

James J. Winemiller, 95, of St. Ansgar, Iowa died Monday November 13, 2023 at home. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday Nov 20, 2023, at First Baptist Church, Osage Iowa. Burial will be at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery at a later date. Visitation Services will be held Sunday Nov 19, 2023, 5:00-7:00 pm Champion Funeral Home in Osage, Iowa Jim was born in Fairmont, West Virginia on November 26, 1927 to Ira and Grace Winemiller. JJ, as his brother Jack called him, was a country boy who hunted rabbits and squirrels before walking to school in the mornings. Jim was proceeded in death by his wife Margot Wagner and his second wife Elaine Buringrud his daughter, Diana, his brother Sam, sisters Maybell and Novella. He is survived by his son, Sgt. John Winemiller (Retired) Las Vegas, Nv. daughter Linda Dickens Lee’s Summit, Mo, daughter Cindy Winemiller (Chris Roberts), Pflugerville, Tx.; and his good friend and companion, Kira Weber Osage, Iowa; his siblings, Jack Winemiller Oak Grove, Mo, Shirley Lobash Uniontown, Pa. and Connie Cable Hiller, Pa. Jim was the proud grandfather to Amy (Anthony) House Peculiar Mo., Jennifer (Craig) DeBlois San Antonio, Tx, Sarah (Ryan) Burke Dallas, Tx, James (Shelby) Cowen Pflugerville, Tx, Teresa Beerbower Independence Mo, Will Buford Denver Co. and 11 great-grandchildren. Jim retired from the U.S. Airforce as a Chief Master Sgt. His 42 years of service spanned 3 wars and many conflicts throughout the world. Jim’s career began when he joined the Merchant Marines until it was discovered he was underaged and was told, “Son come back when you are older”. When he was legal age, he entered the Army and joined the 3rd Army under the command of General George Patton arriving in Germany thru Belgium. Jim remained in Germany as part of the occupation forces, until the start of 1948. In 1956 he and his family served 3 years at Ashiya AFB, Japan. Returning to the U.S., Jim served at Richards-Gebauar AFB in Kansas City, Mo. When transferred to Travis AFB, he enjoyed boating and was an active member of the Solano Yacht Club and managed the Can Can Duck Club. After a distinguished career as a proud member of the U.S. Military, Jim retired from Travis AFB Fairfield, CA. He made his home in St. Ansgar where he enjoyed living on the Cedar River and the company of his many friends playing cards at the American Legion Post #358 St. Ansgar, Iowa where he was an active member.
