Diane Cowell

Diane Lee Cowell 73 of New Hampton, joined her late husband on July 24, 2023, passing away of complications from Alzheimer. Diane was born to the late Leo and Betty (Elizabeth Pata) Detert on December 19th, 1949. Visitation will be Friday, July 28 at 10 am and funeral at 11 am at Schroeder Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 207 South School Street in St. Ansgar Iowa. Burial following at St. Ansgar Cemetery. She married the love of her life Russell Dean Cowell on December 30th, 1967. Her Czechoslovakian heritage was very important to her. Diane loved going to the Cedar Rapids Czech Village and discovering distant relatives and visiting the various shops. She often introduced many of her culture’s recipes and dishes to her family. Caring for children was a passion of Diane’s. She cared for her siblings at a young age, her own children, and later her grandchildren. Additionally, she worked for many years with her husband in managing various restaurants around the state. Saying Diane was an avid reader is an understatement. Her large collection of books was often a subject of conversation. She was very competitive, playing cribbage, Liverpool Rummy, and other cards games occasionally using “creative” language. Consistently driving, exploring, learning, investigating, Diane was always very inquisitive. Proceeded in death by her husband, Russell Dean Cowell, and sister Connie Phillips. Diane is survived by her: son, Mark (Doug Goodwin) Cowell; daughter, Justine (Jeff) Gerber; grandchildren, Nicole (Jeremy) Rethamel, Sarah (Tyler) Wood and Hunter Gerber; great-grandchildren, Alexis, Tyler, Mikaela and Carver Rethamel; Lilah and Blayke (due September) Wood, Kaiden Hajek; siblings, Cherry Cronin, Lonnie “Butch” (Betty “Punk”) Detert and Susie Molz; brother-in-law, Lee Cowell; sisters-in-law, Karen (Larry) Cowell and Betty Van Horn.
