Marcella Caroline Hackenmiller

May 1, 1928 — December 26, 2022

Marcella Caroline Hackenmiller, 94, formerly of Stacyville and a resident at Apple Valley Assisted Living in Osage, died Monday, December 26, 2022 at Faith Lutheran Home of natural causes. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, IA. A funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 30 at Visitation Catholic Church with Father Raymond Burkle officiating. Burial will be in Visitation Catholic Church Cemetery. Marcella was a May Day child, born May 1, 1928, in Stacyville, the daughter of Roman and Bertha (Pint) Michels. She attended up to eighth grade at Visitation School, then worked for several families in the Osage area as a housekeeper and waitress. On August 10, 1949, she married Rudolph (Rudy) Hackenmiller at Visitation Church in Stacyville. She moved with Rudy to the family farm southwest of Stacyville, where they raised 10 children. After retiring from the farm, they moved to Stacyville. Marcella became a resident of Apple Valley Assisted Living in 2019 and truly enjoyed her time there. In addition to her motherly duties in faithfully providing for her large family, she also worked for the former Maple Inn in Osage, waitressing for many years. She liked bonding with the restaurant patrons and staff. Marcella also enjoyed dancing at the Terp in Austin, playing a variety of card games and she liked being with friends and family on mini-vacation destinations, annual ‘sisters weekends’ with her 7 daughters, or traveling with her best friends to garage sales in surrounding communities. She was an avid gardener and produced bountiful yields from her huge garden on the family farm. Just like her mother Bertha, Marcella was an excellent baker of bread, rolls, pies and other desserts. She was a good friend to all who knew her. She was a long time member of Visitation Catholic Church and she was a member of the Christian Mothers organization. She was an active member of her church Circle and was a faithful member of the Visitation Church Choir. Marcella loved to sing and relished each opportunity to worship in song with all of her choir friends. She loved all her children and their spouses, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, personally celebrating milestones with them whenever possible. She attended many of their social and school events. Her love for family went hand in hand with her deeply devout faith. She made the Rosary a huge part of her daily life, even incorporating it in her walking exercise routines or when someone she knew needed prayers. She will be greatly missed by her: children who loved her dearly, Sue Rogers of Osage, Ruth DeGroff of Osage, Chuck (Mary Ann) Hackenmiller of Lincoln, NE, Elaine (Harry) Boland of Spring Valley, MN, Al (Betty) Hackenmiller of Stacyville, Frank Hackenmiller (Barb Francis) of Osage, Marilyn (Bill) Coonradt of Osage, Ann (Tom) Schueller of Marion, IA, Doris (John) Taets of Fort Dodge, IA, and Mary (Dave) Hartogh of Osage; 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by: sister, Darlene Hemann, Osage; sisters-in-law Gloria Michels of Austin, MN and Laura Michels of Fresno, CA; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Harvey of Loveland, CO. She was preceded in death by her: parents; husband, Rudy, in 1996; her siblings and in-laws, Jerry and Sally Michels, Joan and Carl Tatone, Lavern Michels, Annette and Richard Sonberg, Bill Michels, Margaret Harvey, Art Hemann, Henry Sletten, Joe and Liz Hackenmiller, Margaret and Paul Mayer; and sons-in-law Jim Rogers and Dave DeGroff. The family expresses their sincere gratitude to the Apple Valley staff, Dr. Hargens and staff at Mitchell County Regional Hospital in Osage, the Faith Home staff and St. Croix Hospice staff for the above and beyond care they provided Marcella during her final days.
