Norbert Roman Michels

Norbert Roman Michels of Stacyville, Iowa passed away on November 12, 2021 at the age of 93. His commitment to his family and faith should be an inspiration to ALL of us, making his way through life in a positive way. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Osage, with Rev. Raymond Burkle officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends prior to the service from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Burial will be at Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville following the funeral. On April 22, 1928 Norbert was the 5th child born to Anton & Margaret Michels. He grew up on the family farm SE of Stacyville. At the age of 2 he became deaf, with the help of his family he gained his confidence and learned to lip read and went to school to graduate in 1947 from Visitation Catholic High School in Stacyville. He enjoyed roller skating, ice skating on the Little Cedar River, baseball and being in the 4-H club. On the farm he helped with the dairy cows, horses, and was always willing to help with farming. In 1959, Norbie moved to Cedar Falls and started working at the Viking Pump as a machinist. He took great pride in his 31 years there, he had many friends, which they called him 'Mike'. Norbie returned home to Stacyville in 1990 and purchased his home, where he had beautiful flower gardens, fruit & vegetable gardens. He enjoyed baking and collecting new recipes. He made the best Strawberry Pies and Crazy Cake! Woodworking projects became one of his favorite activities, along with playing card games, board games, puzzles and word searches. He also enjoyed going to musicals, which if a ride was needed he would pick up many passengers. Norbie belonged to Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus, and a bowling team. Norbert was friends to all and had a very special bond with the kids, he will be missed by his nieces and nephews; Beth, Marie, Amy, Russ, Norm, Mark, Joe, Jeanne, Rich, Ralph, Gary, Tony, Theresa, Vickie, Laurie, Pat, Audrey, David, Lynette, Christine, Matt and spouses. The great & great, great nieces and nephews. Sister in laws Marjorie Michels, Mary Michels and Karen Michels. Norbert was preceded in death by his parents Anton & Margaret, siblings Ralph Michels, Agnes Michels, Eugene Michels, Viola & Wayne Schuchart, Elmer Michels, nieces Elizabeth Michels and Margaret Michels and nephew Eric Hackenmiller.
