Florence Elizabeth Smith

Florence Smith, age 93, died at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar, Iowa, on February 23, 2025. Florence was born on June 19, 1931, to Louis and Leona Wegman on the family farm near Dover Minnesota. Florence was a great help to her dad and loved helping him plow with horses while she was growing up. With her deep religious faith, Florence decided to join the convent, but before taking her final vows, she decided she wanted to be married and raise a family. Florence lived and worked in Rochester, Minnesota at St. Mary’s Hospital. Eventually, she met her husband, Gerwin Smith at the Pla-mor while dancing. They were married on October 24, 1959. Florence and Gerwin raised four children on a dairy farm near Meyer, Iowa. Florence enjoyed being a mom to her four children, gardening, and helping on the farm. She was a wonderful cook and loved her pets, both dogs and cats. After the children were older, Florence began working part-time at the Mitchell County Care Facility for 27 years.

Florence is survived by her children, Anne (Jerry) Yamriska, Gary Smith, Robert (Mina) Smith; two grandchildren, Emily and Zachary Smith; siblings, Rosemary Hemann, Marvin (Exe) Wegman, Donald Wegman, and Regina (Tim) Anderson. She was preceded in death by her husband Gerwin; daughter, Jane Smith; her parents; siblings, Margie Guenther, Bernard Wegman, Lorraine Bonine, Leora Delaney, Dorothy Wagner, and an infant brother. 

The funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church, Osage, Iowa on March 3, 2025. The visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. -10:30 a.m. with the funeral following at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Osage, Iowa. There will be a lunch following the service.
